Creation Grants: Canada Council for the Arts and New Brunswick Arts Board — 2022-2024
Jane was awarded full creation grants from both the Canada Council for the Arts as well as the New Brunswick Arts Board to write the first draft of her novel, The Watering of the Girls, a tale of two women whose stories entwine: Viva Cheyne, an isolated, elderly healer, and Tilly Leary, a resilient girl in need of family. The novel is set on White Head Island, where Jane spent much of her childhood.
Mentorship with poet Allan Cooper – 2015
Writers’ Federation launches new mentorship program to support emerging writers
Fredericton, NB (March 16, 2015) - The Writers’ Federation of New Brunswick (WFNB) is pleased to announce the launch of its new mentorship program to support the next generation of New Brunswick authors.
The federation selected poets Allan Cooper and Jane Simpson from several dozen applicants to be the first mentor–mentee pair in this skills-building program.
Under the program, emerging writers with a strong body of work are mentored by professional writers in a one-on-one setting. This creative partnership gives established authors the opportunity to share their knowledge and guide emerging writers toward the goal of publication. In the process, emerging writers gain valuable lessons in honing their craft and handling the business side of writing.
Simpson is an award-winning writer whose works have won first prize in the short fiction (2011) and single poem (2013) categories of the WFNB Writing Competition. Her poems were also shortlisted for the Arc Poetry Magazine Poem of the Year and Readers’ Choice Award.
Cooper has published 13 poetry collections and edited literary journals. A founding member of WFNB, he received the Peter Gzowski Award in 1994, and twice won the WFNB Alfred G. Bailey Award. Over the next five months, Cooper will mentor Simpson on her evolving poetry manuscript through a series of personal consultations and reviews.
As part of the program, Simpson will read at WFNB’s WordSpring festival in Moncton on May 22–24. This year celebrates the federation’s 30th anniversary, coinciding with the City of Moncton’s 125th birthday celebration. WordSpring includes professional development workshops, book launches, readings, and an award soirée for the 2015 Writing Competition winners. Visit www.wfnb.ca for more information.
WFNB is the only organization devoted solely to encouraging, invigorating and supporting the province’s community of writers at all stages of development.
